Definition, Function and Purpose of the Human Spirit:

The spirit is the God-conscious mechanism in man. It is the seat of the emotions, the intellect and the will as they relate to God and the spirit realm. The human spirit is synonymous with the nature of man.

The condition of his spirit is the condition of his nature and his nature determines his eternal destiny. God designed the spirit to make humans conscious of God, to make us aware of the One who created us and to provide a means of communication with Him.

The human spirit harmonizes with the spirit realm and receives and transmits impulses of a spiritual nature. It allows man to talk to God and hear from God! It is a stream of life, a conduit for God to flow into and inhabit us!

That’s the purpose of the human spirit… to be an interface between God and man, allowing God to indwell and empower us and to provide an efficient, accurate means of relating to
Him!

Definition, Function and Purpose of the Human Soul!

The soul is the self-conscious mechanism in man. It provides the connection between his spirit and his body. God designed the soul to make him aware of his spirit on one end and his body on the other.

The soul is a perfect interface! It communicates with the spirit on one side and with the brain on the other! It harmonizes with the intellectual/emotional realm and receives and transmits impulses of an intellectual and emotional nature.

For instance, it allows human beings to communicate with each other by putting thoughts and feelings into words and then communicating those words verbally or otherwise.

That’s part of the purpose of the soul… to allow effective communication between human beings!

Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.” (John 14:2) This refers to the office of a servant of God who dispenses his duties well.

In this scripture, the word “house” in the Greek is “oikia” (pronounced oy-kee’-ah) and means “household” and by extension “family” the word “mansions” is “mone” (pronounced ‘mon-ay’) and means “residence” (the act or the place).

Now follow me closely.

The meaning of the word “mansions” is “residence” but it can either be the place of residence or the act of residence. For all my 20 plus years as a Christian I’ve heard it taught as a place of residence, Christians are always referring to their “mansion in heaven” and the “keys to their mansion.” But does that really make sense?

In my Father’s house there are many mansions. If a mansion by definition is a very large house, how can there be many mansions in a house? If we are honest with ourselves we must confess that taken literally this scripture makes no sense at all. Does it?

Even if we expand the meaning of the word ‘house’ to mean ‘household’ or ‘family’ it’s still like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

There must be another interpretation for this scripture and I believe I have it…

Christian Salvation: Can you lose it?

In order to intelligently discuss this topic we must first understand what salvation is.

For the purpose of this discussion therefore, I’m defining salvation as:

“The condition of having eternal life abiding within your regenerated spirit from the moment you repent and accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.”

That’s the salvation this article will discuss.
Friends, the principle that excludes a person from saving himself is the very same principle that excludes him from making himself become unsaved!

You cannot change your nature, neither from sinner to saint nor from saint to sinner!

The Bible teaches us that there are 3 levels of salvation; spirit, soul and body. For more details you can see my article by the same name, but for now we must understand that the foundation of salvation is the born again experience.

During this process the individual’s nature is transformed from Adamic to Christlike and ceases to be merely human but now incorporates the divine. It’s this divine aspect of the new nature which guarantees him or her entrance into heaven.

Therefore, salvation, as complex as it is, is totally based on the validity of the born again experience and the accompanying nature change.

If I ask the typical born again Christian if someone can save themselves the answer is going to be a resounding “NO” and if I further inquire as to why this is so the answer is going to come back, we are not saved by our own works but by faith in Jesus Christ.

Our own works cannot save us; every Christian knows this.

But the thing that the average Christian doesn’t do is follow this concept to its logical conclusion. If your own works or actions cannot save you, how can your own works or actions un-save you?

If you don’t have the power to save yourself, from where did you get the power to un-save yourself?

Remembering that the foundation of salvation is a nature change, the question is; if we don’t have the power to change our nature from human to divine, from where did we get the power to change our nature from divine back to human?

The truth is:

God never gave us that power – Either way!

He left that to Himself and He sealed it when He said, “The gifts and calling of God are without repentance,” Rom. 11:29.

He left nothing to chance!
